Fallen Heroes review

You may have heard of this already. Originally a novel by Barry Nugent of Geek Syndicate fame, this is an all new comic adaptation by Burke and Hare author Martin Conaghan.
The comic itself has had a slightly convoluted history that we won’t go into here- but if you want to know, keep checking the blog, as we’ll be running interviews with both Barry and Martin over the weekend. </ commercial break>
But onto the comic. First off- lovely cover, and I appreciated the short text intro in the inside, too.
The strip itself starts with a bang- dropping the reader into the middle of an incredibly strange situation with no explanation at all of what’s happening to this characters. If you’re wondering- this is a Good Thing. Both the character and the book itself are instantly interesting as the reader asks the obvious question: what the hell is going on?

We’re then introduced to another character, and this one could not be more different- the high-octane Mission:Impossible style action that fills the rest of the book is great fun. Conaghan writes the characters well and with minimal dialogue.
I’m also a sucker for silent comics- to me (if I may get pretentious for a moment) they are the purest form of the medium, so I was delighted by the many silent passages in this issue.

While the writing it tight, the art is variable. True, it never drops below what I would consider to be a professional standard, but there are a few panels where I felt the artist, Steve Penfold, didn’t quite get where he was reaching for- but the fact that he reached at all is commendation enough. And I have to say that conveying action scenes in a dynamic and kinetic way is a very difficult thing, but Penfold manages to do so here with no trouble at all. And the art being in that slightly loose style I adore helps things along too.
All in all, this is a very good first issue, and I cannot imagine anyone reading this and not wanting to pick up the next one.
So, y’know, read it!

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - The Da Vinci Disappearance

Well, this has got me very excited. AC Brotherhood was possibly the best game of last year, and any new DLC is to be welcomed in HiEx Towers!

Ubisoft announced today the release of the new downloadable content (DLC) for Assassin’s Creed®Brotherhood for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. The new DLC, entitled “The Da Vinci Disappearance”, will be available for download at beginning of March 2011 on XBOX LIVE® and on the PlayStation®Network. The DLC will be made available for 800 Microsoft points.

The Da Vinci Disappearance will include both single-player and multiplayer content for Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. After the fall of the Borgias in Rome, Leonardo Da Vinci is kidnapped by the Hermeticists, an underground cult dedicated to transforming mankind. Ezio will embark on a relentless quest to recover stolen paintings in order to find Leo before it is too late, discovering two new locations and two new gameplay features along the way.

The multiplayer addition is the biggest expansion to the award-winning multiplayer yet, including one new map, four new characters and two new game modes. The new multiplayer map, Alhambra, is a lush environment set in Spain’s Albaicin of Granada and provides multileveled indoor and outdoor areas perfect for predators to lurk in the dense crowd for unsuspecting targets.  The four new characters will undoubtedly be a huge hit with Assassin’s Creed fans, consisting of the Dama Rossa, the Knight, the Marquis and the Pariah. The two new gameplay modes, Escort and Assassinate, will provide a whole new gameplay experience for Brotherhood players.  In Escort mode, two teams of four players compete in this team-based mode where each team must protect their VIP target or assassinate the other team’s VIP. In Assassinate mode, six to eight players are pitted against each other deathmatch style in one ten minute round.

For updates on Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, please visit the game’s official Web site at www.assassinscreed.com, via Twitter @AssassinsCreed and Facebook at facebook.com/assassinscreed.

Spellforce Universe Review

Spellforce UniverseWhile I've greatly enjoyed the Spellforce games, it's important to note that some of the Spellforce Universe copies (perhaps all of them, though I'm uncertain) have a corrupted installation for Spellforce 2. Specifically, the file sf2_base05.pak is installed improperly. On trying to play the campaign for either Spellforce 2 or its expansion, the game simply crashes with an error message before loading.

To make matters worse, the company - despite shipping the game (or at least half of it) quite literally unplayable - has apparently abandoned its product, as it seems no patch is forthcoming.

Fortunately, a few gamers in the community have provided workable solutions, but it's a bit of a headache to fix, and not something that should ever have passed quality assurance.

For those crashing when trying to start a game of Spellforce 2, you have two solutions: search a torrent network to download a ~550 megabyte .pak file to replace the version that's installed with this compilation, or visit http://www.spellforce2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50534&highlight=Universe

The second solution only requires a 14 megabyte download, but does involve some hex editing - a complete walkthrough is provided for those unfamiliar with the process.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Review

Legacy of Kain: Soul ReaverThis is my favorite PlayStation game right along with MGS. Superb graphics and music, the best voice acting I've seen next to Metal Gear, andchallaging puzzles and bosses keep you busy. Because all of the dataconstantly streams of the CD instead of loading at seperate times, the onlyload time in the whole game is when your turn your PlayStation. I can'tpicture why it needs 3 memory card blocks, but it is worth it. This game isso great! If you didn't like Blood Omen (and I didn't) definitely try this,it is nothing like Blood Omen (except for the vampires). The game takesplace in a 3rd person view as you control Raziel, one of Kain'slieutenants. Raziel evolved faster than Kain, and he got angry and threwhim into the abyss. The game is filled with puzzles and you have toconstantly swicth between the physical plane and the spiritual realm. Buythis now!

Deus Ex Review

Deus ExI feel bad not giving this game five stars, it's certainly one of the best I've seen in a long time and I can't believe I haven't heard more buzz about it. I bought the game based on the other reviews here, and I have tosay, they're right on target.
Deus Ex really delivers serious gaming fun. It's like a game with an X-Files-esque plot (without the aliens), RogueSpear gaming (strategic FPS), and Soldier of Fortune(action-oriented FPS).It really delivers and gives the player the opportunity to take aballs-out, guns blazing approach or a more stealthy, sneaky method to getwhat you need done (either way, you get just as much skill points, soyou're not penalized for not getting a maximum body count).
The graphicsare great. Nothing particularly revolutionary (as with Vampire) butdefinitely nothing to complain about. Generally very smooth with lots ofdetail, nice lighting, good atmosphere (you really don't see this on a lotof the screenshots). The plasma gun really has a nice effect, as do thegrenades, but when things blow up (like crates) it's just a bunch ofpolygons (yawn). I guess we can't expect all games to have the detail (andgore) of Soldier of Fortune.
There are a few holes in the plot (such asit's feasibility), but with a little willful suspension of disbelief, it'srather engrossing. (I've had more than my fair share of 5+/hour playingsessions with this puppy.) Travelling from New York to Hong Kong to Nevada, you'll see plenty of places and meet enough interesting characters to keepyou going. I don't know if different responses to conversations give yousignificant variances in the plot, but it's interesting all thesame--especially the different ways you can solve your missions.
I'vebecome very picky in terms of the games I buy, I don't have a lot of timeto play them and I don't have a lot of money to spend on them, so they'vegot to be good. This is one of those games I am delighted to have boughtand -certainly- recommend to others.
The only reason this didn't getfive stars is because of the unplausible premise in the plot and the lackof anything really ground-breaking in the realm of gaming (though, I'lladmit, this is one of the best games I've ever seen at really having thefeel of an authentic RPG.)
